SELICHOT SERVICE AND PROGRAM
Saturday, September 24 at 7:30pm

featuring the acclaimed film Haayim Y'karim – "Precious Life" Temple Shalom, 175 Temple St, West Newton

Selichot is an opportunity to prepare ourselves for the Yomim Noraim (the Days of Awe). To focus our awareness on the self-reflection and teshuvah that this season asks of us, on the Saturday evening preceding Rosh Hashanah we will join with Temple Shalom for havdalah and refreshments, followed by the screening of a very powerful Israeli film, "Precious Life," followed by facilitated discussion. We will then gather for a brief Selichot service which will include prayer, song, and reflection, and the sounding of the shofar. Rabbi Audrey will be leading portions of the evening, along with Rabbi Eric Gurvis and Rabbi Neil Hirsh of Temple Shalom, and Temple Shalom's Cantorial Soloist Jeri Robins.

More information about the film:

By profiling a family's struggle to keep their ailing baby alive, "Precious Life" puts the Israeli-Palestine conflict in a microcosm. Israeli TV journalist Shlomi Eldar was assigned to cover a story about a Palestinian woman named Raida, who's in an Israeli hospital, awaiting a bone marrow transplant for her infant son, born without an immune system. Eldar's coverage results in an anonymous Jewish donor paying the $50,000 hospital bill to begin treatment—a compelling twist on an ages-old conflict: Life should be valued regardless of conflicting ideologies. See the op-ed by Tom Friedman in the New York Times. The evening will conclude at 11 pm.
