9/30/084:00PMTashlich at the Charles RiverTashlich, after the afternoon service on the first day of Rosh Hashanah (except where the first day falls on Shabbat, in which case tashlich happens on the second day) involves a ritualized casting off of sins. It is a short, participatory service of prayers and group singing. The origin is most often traced back to a verse in Micah (7:19) concerning repentance: "He will take us back in love, He will cover up our iniquities; you will hurl all our sins into the depths of the sea." The point of tashlich is to symbolically cast our sins into the sea, or at least into a swiftly flowing body of water. We either empty our pockets of stones, which sink and can never be retrieved, or more often these days, throw bread crumbs which the ducks and geese on the Charles River carry away for us.
