Social Action

At Shir Hadash we embrace the Jewish value of tikkun olam, healing the world. We are working on a variety of issues in partnership with Temple Ohabei Shalom of Brookline, including:

Food Insecurity: We support our local Centre Street Food Pantry in Newton with a High Holiday food drive every year and periodic financial donations. We also encourage hands-on involvement in the pantry through volunteering and support it in other ways, such as a drive for toiletries for distribution.

Racial Justice: We recently offered a participatory program to discuss a relevant documentary.

We also plan to host speakers of color who can provide realistic perspectives on communities of color and offer first-hand direct personal experience of discrimination. To dismantle barriers and develop solid partnerships with these communities, we plan to bring in experts to provide trainings and workshops.

We received an AREV grant from the MA Synagogue Council to fund a workshop on racism this fall or winter, run by KAVOD Boston (date TBD). Our ongoing work includes such projects as ending voter suppression and studying the subject of reparations
